March 10, 2005 EVERYDAY HEROES: Six Honolulu Women Working for a Better World photo: residents with Former Lieutenant Governor Mazie Hirono, honorees Amy Agbayani & Annelle Amaral
Here's what some of our women have to say about the event: “What I got out of it is that it inspired me that there are people who's fighting for women's rights for example; gay and lesbian rights. I think that gay and lesbians should have the same rights as with the opposite sex like marriage and all that. I'm glad to know that there are people fighting for women's rights.” -Marissa “I felt grateful for the six heroes who have been advocating for all of us women. I felt hope for the future of our youth and I couldn't believe that strangers, people who don't know me, was fighting for us. They know that school is hard when other areas in life are distracting you such as abuse, hunger, poverty, and more. And they are finding solutions to a better education for troubled youths. They also believe in us incarcerated to transition for a better life. Being locked up isn't helping out. We need integration, transition, guidance, schooling, employment, etc. And these heroes know this and are doing tremendous hard work for us, for the youth, for women, for all mankind. I am in awe!” -Jackie “What I got out of it is that there's a lot of powerful women out there. It made me see the other side that made me feel really hopeful. It is really great that there are a lot of women who is fighting to help us other women.” -Danette “Tonight at ‘Women History' I learned that we women are powerful and equal as men. There are people out there that understand the diversity and stand with courage to empower women.” -Kukahi “Empowerment was the first word that came to my mind. As I sat there, I felt a sense of awe. This is the very first time I was a part of a ceremony of importance. It shows me that as a woman, I too can be empowered. If I haven't been given the opportunity to be a part of TJ Mahoney, I wouldn't have experienced the feeling of contentment that I felt at the ‘Women's History Ceremony”. This is the style of life I want to live.” -Leanne “What I learned from it was that these women make a difference, they not only stand out, but they also show that what men can do, women can also do, and most times better. And they make a difference, for people like me, they inspire me, and they did it by joining groups, and that's the way that they started, slowly climbing the ladder. The saying goes through that each individual counts, and can make a difference………I'm glad I went.” -Ivy February 8, 2005 UH Urban Planning Class begins the process of building a database to help track the progress of our residents. We are proud of former resident, Kimara Randolph for her promotion at work and continued success. I fall right under the Associate Director of Operations.
